La vie est une légende. E.cité - Almaty / Kazakhstan[Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art]
Despite a still complex political situation, Kazakhstan has never ceased to embody a favourable environment for the development of intense artistic activity of high quality. This project aims to show to the public the diversity and relevance of Kazakh artists' present day work through a selection of works not previously exhibited in France. They areworks by artists already established on the international scene (cf. the presence of Galim and Zuaresh Madanov in the of Central Asia Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Biennale) or are being exhibited for the first time outside their country. Brought together in a room at the MAMCS and reflecting the diversity of the visual fields covered (sculpture, photography, video, installations), the ten selected artists, all of whom are aged between 40 and 50, have in common the question of Kazakhstan's history (Said Atabekov's shroud of Genghis Khan, Yerbossyn Meldibekov's distorted busts of Lenin) and popular culture (the bazaar recreated by Elena and Victor Vorobyev, the extraordinary textiles featured in Almagul Menlibayeva's photographs). The vision they convey is not only free of complacency but it is at the same time driven by an extraordinary creative vitality. The project, in collaboration with the Association Apollonia, is an opportunity to bring to the attention of the international public talents hitherto almost unknown in this country.
